The Saffron vodka is a bold blend of eight spices combined into a unique distillate that is not for the faint of palate. Beverage Test Institute International Spirits Review. Sub Rosa Tarragon vodka: 90 points. Exceptional. Pale silvery green color. Bright aromas of fresh tarragon jump from the glass and have a nice creamy mint quality and follow through on a supple, silky entry with pine cone and anise seed notes. Finishes with an interesting spiced nuances on the anise cookie dough fade.
Jamie Boudreau, cocktail whisperer and bartender in Seattle liked them a lot: “Since the bottles say that they are vodka, I guess I’ve got to believe it, but I’d want to give these spirits a different classification altogether, as they are that unique.” from his Spirits and Cocktail blog.
Sub Rosa Spirits makes culinary inspired botanical spirits. The Tarragon vodka is reminiscent of the flavored vodkas found in rural Russia. The Saffron vodka is unique in the spirits world as no one has based a spirit on cumin. These are vodka in name only. Sub Rosa Spirits also has a gin under development.
Web blog Slashfood.com said this about the Tarragon vodka: “It is delightfully spicy and complex with that unmistakable smell of fresh tarragon and hints of the fennel and mint, combined with herbaceous and floral notes, with a hint of musk. This is an unusual and compelling infused vodka, unlike any you may have tried before. It is actually in a class by itself, more grown up, refined, and savory, not sweet.” more…
Slashfood.com had this to say about the Saffron vodka: “The taste is bright and bold with the spices dancing along your tongue. Cumin, coriander, the two cousins galangal and ginger, black pepper and hot cayenne pepper showing bare hints, a hint of turmeric, and floral notes from the saffron. In some ways this is like a gin, taken to the extreme, but with none of gins sharp notes, instead replacing them wit warm and dusky ones.”
Sub Rosa Spirits are available in Oregon, Washington State, California, Colorado, Illinois and Washington DC, the land of all things sub-rosa.
The words ‘sub rosa’ comes from the Latin, literally “under the rose,” from the association of the rose with confidentiality. Use of a rose at secret meetings was a symbol of the sworn confidence of the participants. The ceilings of ancient banquet-rooms were often decorated with roses to remind guests that what was spoken within – was private.
Anyone who is familiar with secret societies such as the Illuminati, the Freemasons, Priory of Scion, Knights Templar will be familiar with the concept of ‘sub rosa’. By sampling our elixirs, you become part of the cadre.
